Photographer & Visual Artist
Vincent Montocchio is a photographer and visual artist from Mauritius. Growing up in a "small miracle" of a nation shaped by diverse European, African, Indian, and Chinese influences instilled in him a deep openness to the world. This proud Mauritian heritage has naturally driven him to explore the globe, dedicating his art to capturing the immense diversity of its people.
The Art of Observation
In a world moving rapidly towards AI and digital creation, Vincent’s work is a deliberate step into the purely analogue. Whether looking through the viewfinder of his fully manual Hasselblad 500C/M camera or turning the blank page of a sketchbook, the unifying thread across his work is his unwavering observation of the world. He is, at his core, a student of the street.
Across both mediums, the driving obsession is to capture the essence of the moment. Finding the profound within the ordinary, he uses whatever is at hand to elevate everyday life into something striking.
Photography: The Instinctive Fraction
His photography is an intuitive reaction to the streets of the world. It is about finding the raw human tension, the vivid colours, and the geometry hidden in everyday chaos - framing the deep relationship between people and their environment. This compelling visual storytelling has been celebrated in two solo exhibitions in his native Mauritius, and has garnered international recognition, including a selection among 30 African photographers for the Pan-African Festival of Algiers (2009) and representing his home country in Google Arts & Culture’s "Colours of Africa" project (2022).
Travel Books: The Tactile Meditation
If his photography is the instinctive fraction of a fleeting moment, his Travel Books are a slower, tactile meditation on it. Rather than simply keeping a journal, the places he explores inspire him, right then and there, to create a deeply intimate and immersive record. Filling the blank pages of his Moleskines, Vincent bridges his photographic eye with his internal monologue - blending intricate ink sketches, vibrant watercolours, and a collage of gathered street ephemera with handwritten reflections. These books offer a raw, unscripted window into how he absorbs the humanity surrounding him.
